Hi Everyone! Today I am going to teach you how to hem a dress. There are many different ways to hem a dress, but today I will be speaking to using a sewing machine.
**First and most importantly, you need to wash and iron the dress that you will be hemming. Many times the fabric may shrink when washing and you do not want to shorten before that. Also it is very important that you wear shoes while measuring the dress hem that you desire. This really goes for any shortening of dresses, skirts, pants, etc.
A few items you will need to accomplish this is: straight pins, ruler, scissors, sewing machine, and chalk/marker.
Now, once you have the dress and your shoes on, you are going to pin the hem of the dress to the length you desire. If you have someone doing this for you, they can pin the hem all the way around the dress. If you are doing this yourself, pin a large enough area to finish the rest after removing the dress. **Please user a ruler all the way around so you get the exact length. You do not want to eyeball this.
Next, you will want to cut off the extra fabric from the bottom of the dress. You will do this by flattening out the dress by grabbing the side seams of the dress. Lay on a flat surface and match up your bottom seams as much as possible. Make sure there are no wrinkles and if there are, please iron these out. Once everything is flat, start to cut the fabric from one side to the other. Leave about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch of fabric to use for hemming the bottom. **Again, please use a ruler for this as you don't want a situation where you do not have enough fabric to work with.
After all the material is cut off, you are going to want to fold the material once at the bottom to get a desired look for the hem. (You can fold the hem once or twice) Stitch a straight line all the way around the dress with your sewing machine without going over the mark you had originally made.
Now you have a perfectly hemmed dress! You did it!! Congratulations!!
